Meet the Team: Tony
Behind the scenes of the maintenance for all our campus buildings and the beautiful garden we have on campus is the hard work of one of our long-term missionaries, Tony Breunig. He fixes anything that breaks and tends the garden with care and faithfulness. Tony is assisted by one of older boys and visiting teams who help with watering, weeding, and planting. The garden has become a living testimony to what God can do through steady hands and willing hearts.
Tony is beloved across the Casa Bernabé campus, from the garden to the dance floor. He serves as our resident grandpa for so many kids who don't have relationships with their biological grandparents. Tony's weekly card games with various houses are highly anticipated. He usually arrives with a pan of brownies in hand, earning him the nickname "Tony Brownie." Tony also dances the first dance with the girls at their quinceañeras that would traditionally be danced with their fathers. He practices with them in the days leading up to the parties to make sure they're ready for their big moment.
We asked Tony a few questions about his years serving at Casa Bernabé:
Where are you from and what did you do before you came to CB?
I'm from Wisconsin. I was the owner of an electrical business, and I also grew up on a dairy farm, which is where I get my variety of skills.
How long have you been at Casa Bernabé, and what first made you want to come?
I have been living here at Casa Bernabé for 17 years. After my first visit the Lord clearly called me here saying this is important and I need to be here.
Describe your calling to becoming a missionary at CB.
I came on a mission trip with a team and clearly felt that this was my new home, so I decided to stay.
What’s been your greatest joy living and working here?
I have loved having relationships with the kids, getting to know them on a personal level, and even getting to know the biological families of some of the kids.
How can we be praying for you?
Please pray for my family to be saved and for continued good health for me because I’m 68 now and I’m still very active for my age and want to continue working hard.
